Our event will be held at the Buffalo Marriott at LECOM Harborcenter. This hotel is located next to Canalside park (offering kayaks, paddle boats and bicycle rentals or a one dollar ferry ride to the Outer Harbor where there are pathways, nature parks and the Buffalo lighthouse). Also, it will give us access to the waterfront where the Buffalo River, Erie Canal and the Eastern end of Lake Erie all meet. There is a light rail transit system, located very close by, that goes up Main Street and is free to ride. We intend to incorporate a local boat ride/ Buffalo history tour within a short distance from our accommodations (less than a half mile walk). Also, nearby is the Buffalo Naval Park, Explore & More Children's Museum, Buffalo Heritage Carousel, Buffalo Transportation Pierce Arrow Museum, Sahlen Field (home of triple AAA Baseball farm team of the Toronto Blue Jays), and the KeyBank Center (Hockey arena for the National Hockey League Buffalo Sabres Team). We anticipate spending a full day of activities in Buffalo.
Another day we intend to take a 20 minute bus ride to Niagara Falls, where we can board the "Maid of the Mist" boat that takes you extremely close to the American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe Falls. Also, a visit to "Goat Island" and a "Cave of the Winds" elevator ride to the base of the American Falls where you can get close enough to feel the mist of the Falls and even explore the "Hurricane Deck" if you want more adventure. Guaranteed to get wet! There will also be time to visit and enjoy the Niagara Falls State Park which was the first State Park created in the United States.
An additional tour (a 40 minute bus ride from downtown Buffalo) will include "Old Fort Niagara", one of the oldest structures on the Great Lakes (almost 300 years old) with an interesting German connection. A possible visit to the "Niagara Power Vista" to learn how water is diverted through tunnels beneath the city to generate electricity. And, if possible, maybe a quick visit to the beautiful quaint town of Lewiston, New York.
Trivia question:
● In what year was Niagara Falls turned off?
